With all the continued buzz about Cannabidiol, or CBD, questions may pop up for Christians about the use of these hemp-derived products. One big one is: Can I honor God with my body by using CBD?
Genesis 2:7 says God fashioned man with His own hand from the dust of the ground. God also said His creation was very good. Your body, then, must be important to God. Mine too. This message continues throughout the Bible, as Jesus came to earth in the flesh – with a physical body. Our bodies have eternal significance, as Colossians 1:16 states that all things in heaven and on earth were created by Christ and for Christ. What we do with our bodies matters, because our physical selves were created to honor Christ. We either worship Him by the choices we make with our bodies or we dishonor Him.
Can using CBD products help us honor God with our bodies? Here are six ways science is showing it might:
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, about 40 million adults age 18 and older in the US have a form of anxiety. In the entire world, 1 in 13 suffer from anxiety disorder, which makes it the most common mental disorder worldwide. The main factor that creates anxiety is large levels of stress. God didn’t create humans to have high levels of stress and anxiety. In fact, He instructs us many times throughout the Bible not to fret or have anxiety.
When our bodies are constantly under stress, we can develop other mental health issues as well, including depression, fatigue, excessive headaches, and muscular tension. Stress and anxiety, and the issues they create, get in the way of our ability to live our lives for God the way He intended us to do. When we suffer from anxiety, it’s tough to share our faith, because anxiety demonstrates a lack of faith.
If you find yourself feeling chronically anxious, pray first and often. Ask God to restore your faith in Him and help you surrender to Him fully. You can also try CBD products to help ease anxiety and help reconnect your faith so you can share it boldly.
There are many testimonies of people finding relief from pain and inflammation by using CBD tinctures and topicals. CBD is natural and non-addictive, which makes it a great alternative to stronger painkillers such as opioids. By using CBD to reduce pain, we put ourselves in a position to be more joyful.
God has a plan for you. Physical and mental pain are hurdles that get in the way and strip you of the ability to fulfill God’s purpose for you. It’s hard to be active, motivated, and living in abundant joy when you contend with constant pain. Pain can create a blockage in your relationship with God and the people around you. By using CBD to alleviate pain, you may be able to better engage with others and enjoy the life God gave you.
CBD is also thought to be helpful in the weaning off of addictive drugs such as opiates. Opiates attach to receptors in your brain that make you feel happy and healthy. Your body naturally releases endorphins that do this on their own. When you take opiates every day, your body stops releasing its self-created endorphins because your body feels like it doesn’t need to. When you stop taking the opiates, your body no longer knows to release the endorphins it needs to make you feel happy and healthy. Your body is used to the opiates manually releasing those endorphins. When you go off of them, your body doesn’t realize it. When our bodies don’t make these endorphins anymore, we start to feel depressed. This often leads to people going back to the opiates, and it becomes a cycle, a craving, an addiction.
God tells us in the Bible to keep our bodies pure. In fact, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
Scienctific studies show that CBD interacts with our bodies endocannabinoid system that keeps our bodies in a state of balance. God created it Himself, and everything He made has a purpose. CBD may train our brains to be open to producing more serotonin, organically restoring your natural chemicals that produce feelings of happiness. Some people have been successful at incorporating CBD into their fight to overcome addiction to opiates, one of the toughest addictions to fight.
CBD can also be used to clear your mind, as well as focus better. Whether you are a parent with a stressful life or can’t seem to sit still in your church service on Sundays, CBD can help with both. As regular CBD use helps clear up stress and anxiety, our minds are more relaxed and can focus better on other important parts of our lives, such as our families. Along with our families, we can better focus on our relationship with God. It may be hard for you to focus on your relationship with God. Maybe you can’t seem to sit down and enjoy God’s word, or maybe you can’t seem to find the right moment to talk with God. CBD may help you better live out Psalm 46:10, which tells us to: “Be still and know that I am God.”
Insomnia, a disorder that prevents those who suffer from it from falling asleep or staying asleep, can be devastating. Without enough sleep, you may gain weight, become irritable, stay in a state of mental fogginess, feel too lethargic to be productive, and just have overall trouble functioning. It can get in the way of family life, social activities, and self-care. CBD decreases brain activity, which may help regulate sleep cycles. A 2006 study found CBD useful in stimulating restfulness, while also giving feelings of happiness and peace of mind. The recommended amount of sleep for optimal health for adults is 7 to 9 hours each night. By using CBD as part of their health routine, people with insomnia may be better able to achieve these numbers, resulting in a better overall performance in life and a better relationship with family, friends, coworkers, and God.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, is the body and mind’s responses to traumatic life experiences. For example, PTSD can occur because people were exposed to abuse, work in law enforcement, go to war as a soldier, or witness a tragedy. Those who suffer from PTSD may experience flashbacks to the traumatic events, lash out in anger, and experience depression. It can tear the one affected by PTSD away from healthy relationships with family and God. For me, PTSD stemmed from early childhood abuse and family instability. As an adolescent, it wreaked havoc on my relationships with my family members and God. Having PTSD led to severe anger issues, violent tendencies, and depression.
CBD can be a great alternative to try instead of prescription medications that can make you feel over sedated or stimulated, or can have more addictive properties. I was prescribed heavy dosages of medications that caused an increase in weight by 40 pounds, constant migraines, and a feeling of heaviness all the time that led to me always wanting to sleep. I ended up asking to end the medications, as they weren’t helping. I still had the underlying issues that medication only somewhat covered up rather than helping me heal.
I weaned off of the medication and prayed for the first time in a long time for God to heal me. With lots of family help, counseling, and constant communication with God, I no longer have active symptoms of PTSD. As CBD studies continue to show great promise in relieving PTSD symptoms, it could be a great alternative to heavier drugs commonly prescribed for mental and emotional disorders.
As always, before making any changes to your health routine or medications, pray. Seek the Lord’s wisdom and guidance. And consult your doctor or medical professional. With optimal health, you can fulfill your passion and purpose.
