Is Using Cannabis a Sin? Your Questions Answered

Is Using Cannabis Sin

Many people are wondering, is using cannabis a sin? The short answer is no. The Bible never mentions using cannabis. But the Bible does provide some general principles we can use to answer the question.

The most important biblical principle is Jesus’ mandate to love one another:

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34–35, ESV

James refers to this principle as “the royal law”:

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you are doing well. James 2:8, ESV

And Paul echoes the same thing, clarifying even further:

Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:8–10, ESV

So if, in loving one another, we fulfill the whole law, then that’s ultimately all we have to worry about. Does using cannabis do harm to a neighbor? The recent FDA approval of CBD to treat epileptic seizures is just one example of how CBD can be used to bring relief to people who are suffering. Many other people are starting to realize that CBD – which doesn’t produce any intoxicating effects for those who use it – is extremely useful to treat everything from PTSD and depression to anxiety and insomnia – a lot in between.

Likewise, scripture presents cannabis, along with all the other plants of God’s creation, as being created good and intended for our use:

And God said, ‘Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. Genesis 1:29–31, ESV

We should always be careful with any substance we use, but CBD is a gift from God to help us enjoy the healing properties of cannabis without getting high.

That’s good news, wouldn’t you say?
