Why Taking CBD Won’t Conflict with Christian Values

Consuming CBD Wont Conflict Christian Values

When people think of cannabinoid products such as CBD they tend to associate it with common marijuana use which can be justified to a degree but there are also a lot of negatives involved when it comes to using marijuana products. Let us first look at what the Christian take is on psychoactive products such as those that contain THC and then look at CBD from a similar standpoint.

Psychoactive Products Versus Alcohol

Christians are not prohibited from psychoactive products entirely as evidenced by consumption of alcohol such as beer and wine. Small amounts of products with psychoactive effects are permissible while intoxication and inebriation are prohibited.

This can be seen in Psalm 104:14-15, Galatians 5:19-21, Romans 13:13, Ephesians 5:18 and 1 Peter 4:3. Some stricter sects of Christianity do ban alcohol and all psychoactive products by taking the prohibition of drunkenness in the Bible to the extreme.

Therefore, it stands to reason that even the use of products containing THC should be acceptable as long as it does not bring on a state of intoxication. CBD products generally only contain around 0.3% THC, which is not likely to cause a state of euphoria and so does not go against the tenets of the Bible.

Comparing Cannabis Related Products to Alcohol

Cannabis extracts are created from an organic substance (plants) in the same manner as beer (mostly grains) and wine (mostly grapes) are also created from organic substances. Cannabis extracts have the potential to cause intoxication in the same manner as alcohol if there are high levels of the psychoactive compound THC in the extract.

Alcohol affects different people in different ways and you can build up a tolerance to the product, cannabis use can also build up a tolerance. Cannabis and alcohol can also be habit-forming, although cannabis is unlikely to cause an addiction, while alcohol can. You can overdose and die from large amounts of alcohol, but even with higher THC strains, you are not likely to suffer from overdoses or blackouts from using cannabis products and to date, there have been no fatalities from using natural cannabis products.

Alcohol is a controlled substance with specific guidelines as to the contents and the level of alcohol in the product. At this point in time, there are no strict regulations or standards for cannabis products and there can be quite extreme differences between the levels of cannabinoids in the plants and in the extracts. Alcohol is often used in religious ceremonies such as the Catholic Mass, whereas there are very few religions that use marijuana in their celebrations and ceremonies.

There has been extensive research into the effects of alcohol over the years and people are made aware of the various inherent dangers in using alcohol. The legal consumption of cannabis products are relatively new and not enough research has been done to date on the possible effects of regular use of different cannabis products. The use of cannabis products is not directly addressed in the Bible, unlike the use of alcohol. CBD, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid used in most cannabis extract medications is perhaps more in line with a herbal medication as opposed to an intoxicating drug, which would mean that there is no prohibition against it at all in the Biblical sense.

What is CBD and Why is it Not Restricted for Use by Christians?

CBD is cannabidiol, a cannabinoid extracted from cannabis plants (marijuana and hemp). CBD Isolate contains CBD only, no other cannabinoids or other extracts and has no THC or any other psychoactive compounds. Full spectrum or whole plant CBD contains small amounts of THC and other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.

This means that CBD does not have the potential to make you feel high and is therefore not a prohibited substance according to Christian values which state that Christians need to experience an undistorted reality of God’s glory (Philippians 3:20-21; 1 Corinthians 15:12 and 1 Corinthians 13:12). In some ways, CBD may actually be working towards this goal as it helps bring the body back in to balance and may also assist in removing anxiety, stress and depression which gives us a poor outlook.

CBD is Closer To Drinking a Cup of Coffee than Alcohol

There is no prohibition on drinking coffee as a stimulant to help start your day or other caffeine products to provide a kick start and remove grogginess and fatigue symptoms. CBD is closer to caffeine than alcohol in the effects that it has on the body. CBD does not cause intoxication and cannot be overdosed and can be added in to drinks and edibles as well as being used in a number of other forms including vaping, smoking, tinctures, topical creams, capsules, powder, pills and so forth. CBD helps bring the body back in to balance without distorting the perception of reality.

CBD helps the body achieve homeostasis and brings it back to how it should be. If anything, CBD actually improves well-being and outlook on reality and helps people see clearer. It also helps remove pain and inflammation and symptoms of debilitating conditions which could then allow for better worship and prayer without distraction.

When looking at cannabis products it is important to separate THC heavy products from CBD products that are low in THCs as there is a huge difference in how they influence the mind and body. The extremely low amounts of THC in the full spectrum CBD blends assist in the entourage effect to stimulate health and healing without being mind altering. CBD will not cause hallucinations and there are minimal side effects when using the products.

Homeopathic, Natural Remedies are not Against Biblical Tenets

CBD is a natural product derived from the cannabis plant and as such could be considered herbal and homeopathic. CBD is not considered to be a narcotic drug in the way that THC heavy marijuana would be. Christians use herbs and homeopathic medications as well as opioids on order to treat illness and the symptoms of diseases.

CBD has no effect on the mind, but only has use as a nutritional supplement and herbal remedy for health. CBD can also be used as a nutritional supplement if you use whole plant CBD, in the same way as you take multi-vitamins and other supplements to stay healthy and happy.

CBD does not distort reality and will not interfere with a Christian’s responsibilities to work, family and the church. Cannabis containing high levels of THC may cause people to lack the drive to fulfill their responsibilities and may even cause neglect of family and church. CBD is purely medicinal and does not cause lethargy and a reduced engagement with all aspects of normal life.

There are drugs which contain THC which are designed to improve health, other than the minor amounts found in CBD. This is also quite far removed from the use of marijuana as a mind-altering substance. These medications are designed for healing, health and well-being to improve conditions such as Alzheimer’s, severe nausea such as that experienced in cancer treatment and as an appetite booster for various conditions.

While there is no specific Biblical passage against herbal medications of these kinds, it is important to separate cannabis extracts used to heal and marijuana used leisurely to get high. If you are unsure, take the question to your Church leaders so that they can make an informed decision on the use of various cannabis products.
